We rack up thousands of miles each year in the outdoors. It’s safe to say we’re trail junkies, and love nothing better than a great trail run, hike, or backpacking adventure. And we’re united in the belief that great, well-designed outdoor apparel should be simultaneously high performing and stylish – keeping us dry, comfy, cool and moving on the trail, while looking good, too. Check out our top trails near Asheville, NC and North Georgia hikes for some of our favorite trails in the South.
We’ve wrapped our favorite women’s outdoor apparel into our 2017 Outdoor Gift Guide. Find the perfect outdoor gift for her – or some new outfits or outerwear for your own trail adventures. THE DR IS IN
Smartwool’s PhD socks keep our feet comfortable and on the move, mile after mile. The Merino wool blend helps keep our feet cool and dry. And the seamless toe and Elite Fit system locks the sock securely in place to help prevent blisters and hot spots. Smartwool’s multiple styles, weights, and heights have us covered no matter the adventure.
LOOKING GOOD AND FEELING GREAT
It’s not often you find a piece of gear that looks as amazing as it works! The KUHL Spyfire does just that. The 800-fill, ethically sourced, goose down and weather-resistant outer shell keep us toasty in even the toughest winter weather. And the Spyfire’s slim fit and details take us from trail to town looking stylish, too.
We love this modern update to a classic favorite! There’s nothing like a comfy fleece hoodie on a frosty morning, but Stio has upped the game with the Sweetwater Fleece. A stylish cut and feminine details like ruched collar, contrasting zipper and drop tail hem make this a versatile piece for hitting the trail or hitting the town.
PERFECTLY CAPABLE PACK
The Batac 16L is the perfect size for day hikes, urban exploration, or travel. The versatile bag features a main zippered compartment, a zippered pocket on the front, and two mesh pockets on the sides for water bottles and small gear. Like our other Cotopaxi favorite, the Cotopaxi Luzon 18L, each Batac’s color pattern is chosen by its fabricator from nylon remnants, so every bag is one of a kind.
Gear for Good
A fleece that keeps us warm and does good for the world? We’ll take two! This fleece looks so comfortable we don’t think we’ll ever want to take it off. With it’s Polartech Powerstretch construction, it seems ultra-warm, and we love that it comes equipped with thumbholes, a hoody, and a slim fit. Plus, through a partnership with Radiating Hope (radiatinghope.org), with each purchase, a patient in Senegal gets a cancer treatment. Amazing.
The Capilene baselayer system from Patagonia offers a wide range of weights and styles, from lightweight to heavyweight, short sleeve to long sleeve, to make layering easy. They’re soft and comfy as a base-layer, and they transition well to an outer layer once the sun warms things up a little. And they’re super breathable and fast-drying, too.
The Flyloft Vest is the perfect layer for our often-unpredictable weather here in the South. This ultra-comfortable synthetic-fill vest delivers plenty of warmth for those chilly sunrise hikes, and then packs down into its own pocket when temperatures climb later in the day. A high collar seals out the wind, and two deep zippered side pockets provide plenty of space for keys, a cell phone, or chilly hands. The baffled construction gives the vest a stylish, tailored look that’s perfectly suited for adventures on the trail or around town.
The Phoenix Mesh Lo hiking shoe provides the ultimate in ventilation for hot weather treks. The split leather and mesh upper give the shoe plenty of breathing room when temperatures climb, and dry quickly should we encounter a creek or stream crossing. It’s pretty much the perfect hiking shoe for the South’s legendary summertime heat. And the super grippy sole provides plenty of traction.
Sunski glasses give a stylish, vintage 80’s vibe that can be worn anywhere from mountaintop exploring to chilling at the beach, and anywhere in between. And at about $50 they won’t bust the budget. Not only are Sunski glasses stylish and comfortable, but the company donates 1% of their revenue each year to worthy organizations committed to maintaining a healthy environment.
The Sugarpine from Ahnu delivers performance, style and stability in a waterproof hiking boot. We’ve loved the way these boots have kept our feet dry and comfortable while trekking through some serious Georgia winter weather, on and off trail. This versatile boot is one of our go-to faves for mid-length hiking adventures, or anytime we see the forecast calling for wet weather or soggy trails.
ALL GOOD IN THE HOOD
This is possibly one of our favorite creations of all time. The BUFF Thermal Hoodie is the best part of a pullover hoodie: the soft, warm hood! Now no matter what we’re wearing we can have the comfy, cozy feel of a wool hoodie. The Merino Wool hood keeps our heads warm, the face protector keeps our faces protected from wind and snow, and when the temperatures rise, it stows small and easy in our backpacks, unlike a regular, bulky fleece.
WEATHER RESISTANT & BREATHABLE
Out on the trail, the Stio Vescent Soft Shell Jacket works as hard as we do. The comfortable microfleece lining keeps us warm and snug, while the weather resistant outer shell blocks the wind and keeps us dry during rainy adventures. The Vescent is also remarkably breathable, keeping us dry when we’re powering through tough terrain.
MADE IN THE USA + GUARANTEED FOR LIFE
Darn Tough socks are nearly indestructible and darn comfortable – and they’re unconditionally guaranteed, for life! Fast drying and wicking merino wool keeps our feet comfy and dry, even on the longest adventures. Sizes, thicknesses and heights are available for just about any type of outdoor activity.
It’s a winter must-have, especially when temps plummet. This 800-fill-goose-down-insulated jacket blends warmth, comfort, packability and style for winter adventures. The Hometown Down Jacket from Stio is filled with HyperDRY water repellent goose down, a premium, water repellant down that stays dryer and warmer than untreated down. It’s been our go-to during the past few bi-polar winters in the South.
Streamlined and Stable
The Lowa Innox GTX Mid has quickly become one of our go-to boots for just about any outdoor adventure. The Innox GTX is waterproof but breathable, keeping us dry and warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The durable, grippy sole keeps us firmly planted on the trail in challenging terrain, and its streamlined profile and light weight (only one pound each) allows us to keep up the pace without extra weight and bulk.
STYLE AND FUNCTION
We love the Stio Alpha Alpine Pullover for its versatility. This stylish and functional pullover takes us from trail to town throughout the seasons, thanks to its ultra breathable Polartec Alpha Active insulation. From spring bike rides on the Silver Comet, to fall hikes on the Appalachian Trail, and weekend brunch with friends, the Alpha Alpine Pullover has us covered and comfortable.
LOCALLY-OWNED IN ATL
How many times have we lost sunglasses at the beach or on the water? (Seriously, we’ve lost count.) So we were super excited to find these stylish floating frames from a super awesome, outdoor-focused local Atlanta company. Rheos Gear offers wide range of styles, colors and lenses to match your adventure style.
SIMPLE YET VERSATILE
Sometimes the simplest things can be the best. BUFF Original Multifunctional Headwear can be used in 13 different configurations to keep the head, neck and face protected from wicked winter weather, scorching summer sun, or pesky insects. The BUFF Original line keeps us warm and comfortable on cold weather adventures with it’s wicking and windproof fabric, while the BUFF UV and BUFF UV Insect Sheild lines keep us protected from the harsh Southern sun and ever-present pesky insects.
ULTIMATE WAMTH ON THE SLOPES
As with all of our Stio gear, we absolutely love the Durrance Jacket. This jacket keeps us toasty through the coldest adventures on and off the slopes. Featuring a two layer waterproof, breathable shell and water repellant 650-fill down insulation, the Durrance is designed for ultimate warmth and dryness. An adjustable, down-filled hood and powder skirt are both removable. The Durrance is an all-around amazing winter jacket, perfect for the ski slopes and around town.
FOUL WEATHER PROTECTION
The stylish, comfortable, and versitile Modis Anorak jacket keeps us warm and dry when bad weather threatens our adventures. The pullover-style rain jacket stops rain and wind in its tracks thanks to waterproof fabric, fully taped seams, and Aquagaurd zippers. One large front zipper allows for quick venting and outerwear changes, and two zippered side pockets are perfect for protecting phones, keys, and other small gear from the wet. And once the rain clears, the Modis packs up small, perfect for stashing in a backpack.
