Outdoor Gifts $25 to $50
Looking for the perfect hiking, camping, or running gift? Our 2017 outdoor gift guide features our favorite, hand-picked outdoor gifts from $25 to $50.
We test tons of gear on our many outdoor adventures throughout the South, and we’ve wrapped our hand-selected, trail-tested favorites into our 2017 Outdoor Gift Guide. We’ve sorted our favorite hiking, backpacking and camping gear and apparel by price and activity, to help you find the perfect outdoor gift – or find some new gear for your own outdoor adventures.
PERFECTLY CAPABLE PACK
The Batac 16L is the perfect size for day hikes, urban exploration, or travel. The versatile bag features a main zippered compartment, a zippered pocket on the front, and two mesh pockets on the sides for water bottles and small gear. Like our other Cotopaxi favorite, the Cotopaxi Luzon 18L, each Batac’s color pattern is chosen by its fabricator from nylon remnants, so every bag is one of a kind.
RUGGED & CUSTOMIZABLE
We love this OtterBox tumbler for its versatility and convenience: the tumbler features additional accessories that let us completely customize our experience, and help to save weight in our camp duffel and backpacks. The rugged, stainless steel tumbler features a copper plated inner lining for exceptional temperature control and a sweat resistant design to keep things dry. Accessories like a french press, shaker lid, flavor infuser, thermal lid, and sleeve keep us moving through the day, from morning coffee, to afternoon cucumber water, to evening cocktails by the campfire.
COMFORTABLE & WICKING
We’ve been thoroughly impressed with this long sleeve during our warm weather runs here in the South. The Climalite fabric wicks moisture away from the body helping keep us dry and cool. The long sleeves offer great sun protection and reflective strips increase visibility in low light. We also love the thumb loops that keep the sleeves in place when we’re active, and are infinitely useful when we’re pulling on an outer layer.
ULTRA-VERSATILE RUNNING WEAR
The Cotopaxi Quito Active Shirt is perfect for just about any activity or adventure. The super soft fabric provides plenty of stretch when climbing, running, or scrambling over rough trail. Seamless armholes eliminate irritating rubbing, and the athletic fit provides a comfortable wear for all-day activity.
PLENTY OF PORTABLE GRILLED FLAVOR
The UCO Flatpack Grill and Fireplace provides a lightweight, portable grill that’s perfect for the park, camping adventures, or the backyard. The grill sets up super quick, and is ready for charcoal or firewood in seconds. The durable stainless steel sides provide an effective windbreak for grilling or enjoying a fire in blustery conditions. And the best part, it folds down to under 1.5 inches thick for easy packing in a backpack.
Coolcore’s line of cooling shirts has kept us cool out on the trail through the warmest weather here in the South. The non-chemical cooling technology is activated by moisture and starts working as soon as we work up a sweat. Unlike other cooling shirts that rely on a chemical added after construction, Coolcore’s technology is built into the fabric so that it won’t fade after multiple washes.
JUST ROLL WITH IT
It’s the perfect way to warm up for a long run or help relieve sore, tired muscles after a grueling summit hike. The Rollga’s innovative design makes it different from other foam rollers. The contoured shape lets us work different areas of the body and specific muscle groups. The Rollga comes complete with a handy carrying strap, and detailed instructions for different exercises and stretches. Ahh… relief.
ULTRA-TASTY TRAIL SNACKS
Trailfoody delivers outstandingly delicious trail foods and snacks – right to our door. Every month’s box is packed with different healthy trail favorites like dried fruit, trail mix, jerky, crackers, energy bars, and more. We love Trailfoody for the selection (many are brands and flavors that we’ve never tried), taste (the snacks are all seriously delicious), and value (each box is priced at a discount off MSRP). Customize your box based on the number of outings per month and group size – and like magic, tasty trail-friendly snacks show up, ready for your adventures.
LIGHTWEIGHT & HIGH QUALITY
The Swedish-made Morakniv Eldris Knife is a staple in our adventure bag. Weighing only 2.8 oz, this pint-sized knife easily stashes in a backpack or cargo pant pocket. The super-sharp stainless steel blade measures 2.3 inches, and the knife’s spine is compatible with a fire starter. The Eldris features a grippy polymer handle, and the included sheath keeps the blade locked away when not in use. It’s the perfect knife for tasks around the campsite and out on the trail.
MEGA DRINKS ON THE GO
This large-sized tumbler keeps 32 ounces of our favorite drinks hot or cold while we’re on the go. The stainless steel tumbler features double wall insulation and a copper plated inner wall for great heat and cold retention. And the durable, plastic slide lid helps prevent spills and splashes. It’s great at the campsite, and on long road trips, too.
Who’s ready for dinner? The GSI Outdoors Gourmet 11 Kitchen Set has just about everything we need to make our favorite campsite meals. The 11-piece set includes a spatula, spoon, wisk, waterproof salt & pepper shakers, two condiment bottles, a cutting board, a scraper, a scrubber, and a towel in a durable nylon case. The days of forgetting the salt (and spatula) are long gone.
The BioLite SiteLight XL provides 300 lumens of beautifully diffused, ambient lighting, perfect for inside the tent or around the campsite, wherever soft lighting is needed. The collapsible, water-resistant lantern features 15 feet of cord and connects with other members of the SiteLight family. The SiteLight XL can be powered with the BioLite PowerLight, BaseLantern XL, or any USB port using the included adapter.
The Thermacell Backpacker Mosquito Repeller is a must have for for camping trips, backyard barbecues, and pool parties. The Backpacker creates a 15’ protective barrier that effectively repels mosquitos and other biting insects. Simply attach to a standard camping fuel canister and light. As the insect repellent-filled mat heats up bugs disappear!
Keeping it cool – or hot
This Klean Kanteen bottle keeps hot drinks steamy for 14 hours and cold drinks icy for up to 40 hours. These colorful, stainless steel bottles feature a double wall insulation for long lasting temperature control and a leak proof lid to prevent messy spills. They’ve been joining on us on all of our adventures, from steamy to frosty and everywhere in between.
We love the space saving multi-functions of the BioLite KettlePot. The KettlePot does triple duty as a cook pot, kettle, and also a space saving carrier for the BioLite CampStove 2. It features an easy pour lid, drip-preventing silicone seal, and handles with cool-touch silicone covers for comfortable cooking. Morning coffee or a gourmet camp dinner, the BioLite KettlePot makes campsite mealtime a snap.
HOT COFFEE FOR HOURS
Super stylish and functional, too, the MiiR 20 oz. Wide Mouth Bottle keeps hot drinks hot for up to 12 hours and cold drinks cold for 24 hours. The BPA free, medical grade stainless steel vacuum bottle features a leak-proof lid, double wall insulation, comes in three sizes, and fits most cupholders. And each MiiR purchase helps fund clean water projects around the world.
LIGHT WEIGHT COOLING
Jake, our black lab, loves to hit the trail as much as we do, but he’s quick to overheat during our hot southern summer adventures. The Ruffwear Jet Stream provides a light weight spandex top panel that shades Jake’s back, and a sponge-like chest panel that wets down to cool his core through evaporation. It’s a new, lighter-weight version of our other favorite, the Ruffwear Swamp Cooler, for adventures that don’t require the Swamp Cooler’s super-cooling.
INSULATED CAMP CUP
Nothing’s better than a hot drink around the campfire after a day of adventure. This MiiR cup keeps drinks hot or cold, thanks to its Thermo 3D double wall insulation technology. The BPA-free stainless steel cup features a clear plastic lid that helps with insulation and prevents spills and splashes. Pair the Camp Cup with the Insulated Wide Mouth Bottle for easy sharing around the fire.
GEAR FOR GOOD
We’ve been longtime fans of the Cotopaxi Inca backpacks, and we’ve been loving the Luzon 18L Daypack, part of the new Del Dia line. The bag is lightweight, easy to pack and has plenty of space for water bottles, snacks, and other small gear. Cotopaxi gives each fabricator complete control over the bag’s colorway, so each backpack is unique and no two are alike. We’re also huge fans of Cotopaxi’s brand, quality, and their mission to help make the world a better place.
SOLAR POWERED ILLUMINATION
Lightweight, portable, and solar powered: the inflatable LuminAid PackLite Max and PackLite Nova provide hours of illumination for lighting up the campsite, pool party or backyard BBQ. The larger PackLite Max comes with a USB connection for faster recharging, and both the Max and the Nova feature a strap for hanging from tent hooks and trees. When not in use, both models deflate and pack down for easy storage and travel.
Sunski glasses give a stylish, vintage 80’s vibe that can be worn anywhere from mountaintop exploring to chilling at the beach, and anywhere in between. And at about $50 they won’t bust the budget. Not only are Sunski glasses stylish and comfortable, but the company donates 1% of their revenue each year to worthy organizations committed to maintaining a healthy environment.
ALL GOOD IN THE HOOD
This is possibly one of our favorite creations of all time. The BUFF Thermal Hoodie is the best part of a pullover hoodie: the soft, warm hood! Now no matter what we’re wearing we can have the comfy, cozy feel of a wool hoodie. The Merino Wool hood keeps our heads warm, the face protector keeps our faces protected from wind and snow, and when the temperatures rise, it stows small and easy in our backpacks, unlike a regular, bulky fleece.
LOCALLY-OWNED IN ATL
How many times have we lost sunglasses at the beach or on the water? (Seriously, we’ve lost count.) So we were super excited to find these stylish floating frames from a super awesome, outdoor-focused local Atlanta company. Rheos Gear offers wide range of styles, colors and lenses to match your adventure style.
The Osprey Hydraulics Reservoir is a game changer when it comes to hydration. Gone are the days of digging through our packs for water bottles when you’ve got a handy bite valve secured to your backpack. The result? We drink more water, drink more often, and stay better hydrated.
LIGHT UP THE NIGHT
Light and bright, the Black Diamond Spot Headlamp shines a 200 lumen beam. When our adventures keep us out after dark or up before sunrise, hands free illumination is a necessity and this Black Diamond Spot has us covered, with three brightness settings and a strobe feature. And it’s waterproof, too.
The Halulite 1.8 L Boiler is super light, durable and packs up nice and tight with a locking fold-up handle. The pot’s uncoated, anodized aluminum resists scratches and stains, and transfers heat quickly and uniformly making anything from boiling water to heating soup quick and easy. The interior easily nests a 220 g fuel canister and compact stove, keeping everything neat and organized in our backpack.
Featuring Coolcore’s chemical-free cooling technology, Coolcore Shorts keep our workouts on track during the sweltering days of summer. The stretchy fabric provides us plenty of range of motion while mesh panels improve air circulation and breathability. And a zippered back pocket is perfect for stashing keys and ID.
This lightweight, versatile backpack is durable, well-designed, and, well, simple. It’s the simplicity that makes the REI Flash 18 pack one of our favorite backpacks for short hikes, urban exploration, day trips, and pretty much everywhere the load is light.
Camp Kitchen Essentials
We love cooking with the Halulite series from GSI Outdoors, and the 2.0 L Pot is a staple of our camp kitchen. The pot’s durable, uncoated, anodized aluminum construction heats up quickly and doesn’t mark or scratch. And the pot’s silicone thumb pads and integrated strainer make it easy to strain water when we’re cooking up a campsite masterpiece.
The Capilene baselayer system from Patagonia offers a wide range of weights and styles, from lightweight to heavyweight, short sleeve to long sleeve, to make layering easy. They’re soft and comfy as a base-layer, and they transition well to an outer layer once the sun warms things up a little. And they’re super breathable and fast-drying, too.
Layer it On
Simply put, we love the Capilene baselayer system from Patagonia. These long-sleeve and short-sleeve mens shirts are soft and comfy as a base layer, and work perfectly as outerwear after the day warms up. They’re breathable and fast-drying, making them awesome for active outdoor activities. And Capilene is available in a range of weights, from lightweight to heavyweight, to ensure comfort in a wide range of temps.
BUFF Insect Shield Arm Sleeves provide added protection from the sun and biting insects. The sleeves combine UPF 40+ sun protection with odorless, insect repelling Permethrin built right into the fabric. The quick drying sleeves are lightweight and super packable, making them perfect for any sunny outdoor adventure where mosquitos, ticks, flies, and other biting insects are a nuisance. We love using the BUFF Arm Sleeves on long runs, sunny mountaintop hikes, and paddles on the river.
WARM & TOASTY
Jake loves a wintertime adventure – but gusty winds and snowy trails can leave him shivering. He absolutely loves his Loft Jacket from Kurgo! It keeps him toasty warm and on the move. The jacket is made of high quality waterproof Microtomic ripstop nylon, with a Polytech fill, and is machine washable for easy clean-up. Adventure pup approved!
This durable, adjustable-length leash features a swivel clip to help prevent tangles, and a adjustable-length handle that can be clipped to our waist for hands-free holding. The Slackline’s handle is well-padded: it makes handling a high-energy, squirrel-crazy puppy like Jake much more manageable. Great color variety, too!
Ruff and Tumble
This is, hands down, the best collar we’ve used. It’s super durable and well made, with an easy-clasp metal leash attachment. And we love the Top Rope’s thoughtful design details, like the rubber tag silencer and reflective trim. It’s survived hundreds of miles on the trail, hundreds of swims in rivers and lakes, dozens of dunks in mud puddles, and it’s still looking prime and pristine. It’s one exceptional collar.
Keep ‘Em Secure
We’ve tried other-brand double-clip harnesses with Jake, and while we loved the results (the double collar and chest clip-ins drastically reduce pulling), we were underwhelmed by their quality and fit. The Front Range wraps this double-clip design in the durable, comfortable Ruffwear construction that we love. It makes for one happy, secure pup on the trail, and gives us extra control when his bursts of crazy puppy energy explode (ie, when a squirrel crosses the trail!).
This brightly colored, lightweight dog jacket provides extra visibility in low-light situations. It’s great for early morning runs – and great for hikes in the wilderness during hunting season, too. And the Track Jacket’s athletic fit covers well, but gives plenty of room for motion – great for a pup on the go.
