We’ve been hiking in the adidas Outdoor Terrex Fast Mid GTX Surround and loving the grippy traction, comfortable fit, and impressive temperature control in this versatile mid-height hiking shoe. The Fast features breathable, waterproof GTX Surround technology which keeps our feet cool and dry from both inside and outside moisture. Combined with a capable Continental rubber outsole for excellent grip on rocky or wet trails and an Ortholite insole for exceptional comfort, the Fast keeps us moving through the South’s varied climate and terrain.
Our trail-tested Terrex Fast Mid GTX Surround review
We’ve hit the trail this season in the adidas Outdoor Terrex Fast Mid GTX Surround, logging miles of wear throughout the South. From the rocky summit of Springer Mountain to the soggy banks of Dicks Creek, the shoe has powered over every type of trail terrain we’ve come across.
After a short break-in time of around five miles, the Fast offered a really comfortable fit. Paired with one of our favorite hiking socks, the Darn Tough Micro Crew, our feet have been happy, comfy, and dry over the miles.
On the trail, the shoe’s light weight and streamlined profile let us keep a steady pace without any excess weight or bulk while providing stability, support, and traction typical of a heavier hiker. And the speed lacing system makes on-the-go adjustments quick and easy giving the shoe a secure, comfortable fit.
Constructed of durable synthetic fabric and mesh, the shoe’s upper offers plenty of support for the foot and ankle. Ample padding protects our ankle from rocky terrain, and the wide tongue helps to keep trail grit and debris out of the shoe. A durable rubber coating on the heel and toe give sensitive areas extra protection from obstacles we encounter on the way.
Dry feet are essential for comfortable hiking in the South’s often warm and humid environment. And we’ve been impressed with the Terrex Fast’s excellent waterproof protection and ventilation, thanks to the GTX Surround technology. Built-in channels in the midsole let heat and moisture escape through the bottom of the shoe as we hike. Combined with the shoe’s breathable synthetic upper, the Terrex Fast provides 360 degrees of ventilation, keeping our feet dry and surprisingly cool.
Inside, the Terrex Fast’s midsole offers plenty of protection from rocks and roots underfoot and provides enough cushioning for all-day comfort on high-mileage days. For an extra comfy ride, the shoe features Ortholite insoles which mold to the shape of our foot for excellent support and cushioning.
Underneath, the Continental Rubber outsole provides excellent traction and stability. The grippy outsole’s wide lugs keep our feet securely planted on the trail when tackling all types of terrain, from loose soil to gravel, and from wet rock outcrops to slippery stream beds.
